How do you create some space when you are feeling triggered by your partner?
“The Mindful Pause” is an intentional pause that you put between the moment you are triggered and the moment you respond.
Often times we get totally triggered in our relationships and go into a defensive and habitual kind of reaction.
In those moments we should create some space. When you feel that tightness and tension in your body, indicating being triggered, give yourself the gift of The Mindful Pause.
Stop what you’re doing or saying, take a deep breath, slow down for a moment and respond appropriately. Sometimes the appropriate response is, “I’m just not ready to talk right now, but in an hour, I’ll come back and let’s see if we can have a more productive conversation.”
